2013 worldwide.

Regenerate (Death of Brostep) leads the record as
a stark, deep, and compelling minimal manifesto.
Moldy soundly rejects the noise-oriented approach
that so many producers are taking. With serious
bass weight and a less-is-more-aesthetic,
Regenerate (Death of Brostep) encourages
discussion about the direction dubstep is taking.

Bad Habits (Brixton VIP) on the flip comes correct
as a great contrast to the A side. The track runs
with deep sub bass and deft Amen style breaks
with great effect, ominous and dark.

Daega Soundʼs stunning remix of Regenerate
finishes off the record masterfully. The
reinterpretation by this Vancouver based duo
(brothers as well) puts the original in a less linear
context, with a deep dancefloor in mind.

Embassy Recordings returns with a two track release from one of the originators of stateside dubstep in Portland, Maine’s Moldy. The release shows us two deep cuts which clearly establish the legitimacy of his Heavy Pressure concept.

A. Embrace the Filth ft. Preston Murphy employs the use of an upright that graced the hands of legendary jazz bassist Charles Mingus. The track teases a jazzy ambience with an electric keyboard over fierce stepper-oriented beats. The tune drops hard with a pulsating bass indicative of the unpredictable temperament of Mingus himself. The tune is carried by militant marching snares and angrily plucked basslines before dropping sharply back into a subdued dark funk.

B. On No Means To Smoke It Moldy offers us his trademark sound. Starting with an appropriate vocal sample and dubbed-out melody, however does not waste time before exposing itself as one of the deepest grooves of the year. Sparse percussion sits atop a rolling bassline in a call-and-response framework creating a hollow oscillation that pushes the track forward beside reggae tinged piano.

Juakali’s Smoke Clears EP is the 4th release on Foreign Familiar featuring two original songs and two remixes within the dubstep genre. The title track is a dub-centric roller produced by Los Angeles’ SMOG affiliates Kelly Dean & Steady that boasts the two remixes one by skillful producer/DJ from India known as Breed, the other by Maine’s Heavy Pressure commandant Selector Moldy. The Breed remix maintains dub elements captured in the original, married with sub-stutter popular in current dubstep releases. Moldy’s remix harks to a well-honed sub pressure context that nods toward rebellion. Juakali’s vocal is commanding on all versions. His lyrics are considerably noteworthy for topical debates. A gem of a tune called Bodega is the ‘b-side’ of this release. Produced by San Francisco’s Jus Wan warranting Jua’s playful yet heart-felt approach in performance. Multiple playbacks is encouraged. There is really nothing quite like this release in the market.
